Celebrate Women in Horror Month with… Surreal Escapes

 

Hi everyone!

Valentine’s Day is over, and if you’ve had your fill of love and romance for a while, why not curl up with a horror story—or several horror stories?

To celebrate Women in Horror month, I’m sharing a look at my short story anthology, Surreal Escapes. The stories in this collection don’t fall into one set category and range from a bit spooky, to humorous, to… just about anything I can imagine.

In this collection of seven speculative stories, ordinary people start off having an average, normal day… until they encounter the world of the surreal. They’ve entered another realm where anything can—and does—happen.

My horror stories have always been a bit different from the norm. They’re more psychologically scary than gory. And some of my “horror” stories aren’t intended to scare at all—they just happen to have main characters who are a little bit… dead.

When I decided to put this collection together, I wanted to feature a broad spectrum of stories that would appeal to a variety of readers. (I also liked the idea of having several of my short stories available to readers all in one place.) They’re not all ghost stories (although several stories feature ghosts in some way) and they’re not all about Halloween. (But of course some are—after all, it is my favorite holiday!)

Authors are always asked, “Where do you get your ideas?” so I decided to share a peek at my writing process. I’ve included a brief note at the end of each story (as I did in my sci-fi anthology, Extraterrestrial Encounters), explaining what inspired me to write it, where I got the idea, or general comments about the plot or the characters.

I hope you enjoy these stories. Some are humorous, some will make you think, and others might unnerve you a bit, but they will all take you on a journey into the surreal for a little while.

Sci-fi Spotlight on… Extraterrestrial Encounters

Hi everyone!

Today I’m sharing a look at my anthology, Extraterrestrial Encounters: A Collection of Sci-Fi Stories. Right now you might be asking yourself, “Wait… What? Sci-fi? Don’t you write romances and horror stories?”

Well, yes. I’m mainly known for writing sensual romances and spooky horror fiction, but every so often I like to surprise myself – and readers.

I’ve always been attracted to the unusual, peculiar, and “weird” that exists in the sci-fi and horror genres. I grew up watching Tales from the Dark Side, Amazing Stories, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, The Outer Limits, and of course, The Twilight Zone.

I read every sci-fi and horror short story I could find, and I believed in the Ancient Astronaut Theory long before Ancient Aliens ever aired. So I guess it’s no surprise that when I started writing, I wrote what I loved reading: sci-fi and horror. 

For me, science fiction is imaginative fiction, and it’s fun to make up all sorts of strange things. Sci-fi stories explore anything possible (or that may be possible one day), such as time travel, parallel universes, alien contact, lost civilizations, artificial intelligence, robots, cloning, repressed societies, UFOs, mind control, futuristic societies, and more.

Sci-fi authors are free to dream up anything and use it in a story without having to do too much explaining about how or why these unusual or fantastic things are possible. In general, readers of sci-fi/fantasy are more open-minded about different plotlines, characters, and settings than readers of a romance novel, for example. Readers know the story isn’t “real” and most likely couldn’t happen, but they’re fine with it. They enjoy escaping into the world of the fantastic.

I like writing in multiple genres because I get to explore different plots, characters, and styles of writing in a horror or a sci-fi story I couldn’t do in a romance – and vice versa. After writing a few romances I like to switch up and focus on horror or sci-fi for a while. My horror stories tend to be more psychological and creepy than bloody, and my sci-fi stories are about strange things that happen to ordinary people.

Authors are always asked, “Where do you get your ideas?” so when I wrote Extraterrestrial Encounters, I decided to share a peek at my writing process. I’ve included a brief note at the end of each story in the collection, explaining what inspired me to write it, where I got the idea, or general comments about the plot or characters.

8 Easy Questions for Author Kelli A. Wilkins (Part 2)

 

Hi everyone! Here’s Part 2 of a recent interview. Enjoy!

 

1. Greetings Kelli, and thank you for coming back to answer the last four questions from the Easy 8. Part One of this interview focused on your romance novels, and for Part Two we’d like to talk about your horror and mystery stories. Have you always been a horror fan? Who (or what) were your early influences?

I’ve always been a fan of the strange, unusual, surreal, and spooky. It’s just in my nature, and I’m drawn to things most people find weird or creepy. I started reading short horror fiction when I was in grade school, and it was about that time when I realized I wanted to be the one writing stories to scare people.

My main literary influence at the time was Stephen King. I read Night Shift when I was nine or ten and I got hooked on short stories. I also was watching The Twilight Zone, Tales from the Darkside, and other shows that told a spooky story in a half hour. I wasn’t scared by the shows, I was actually studying the way the story was told, how the tension built, and how the author crafted a powerful ending. I drew on all these influences when I started writing my horror stories. Maybe this is why my short stories are more psychological/spooky than gory.

2. And it seems you’ve achieved your goal of writing horror fiction to scare people. According to the Horror, Mystery & More section of your site, your short fiction has been included in several anthologies, and yet you’ve self-published a few short horror/mysteries. Why is that?

When I started writing horror, I submitted my short stories to print and online markets because self-publishing didn’t exist yet. I still submit stories to e-zines, anthologies, and print mags when the story matches up with what the market is looking for. However, when my stories are too long or nobody likes the subject matter, I self-publish. That happened with my novella Nightmare in the North. (https://www.kelliwilkins.com/nightmare-in-the-north) It’s a great story, but because of the length and topic (my husband called it “disturbing”) it couldn’t find a home. So I self-published it. I also self-published Extraterrestrial Encounters, a collection of 18 sci-fi stories. (https://www.kelliwilkins.com/extraterrestrial-encounters)

3. You have recently published two very different horror/mystery ebooks. One is The Route 9 Killer, a novella about a serial killer in New Jersey, and Surreal Escapes, a collection of short stories. Can you tell readers about the origins of each of those?

Sure! The Route 9 Killer is a police procedural with a hint of the paranormal thrown in. Here’s the summary and link:

The Route 9 Killer

Detective Jim Rourke suspects a serial killer is hunting women in Central New Jersey. The victims are held captive, brutalized, then murdered and dumped along deserted stretches of Route 9.

There’s no physical evidence, no witnesses, and the killer is smart enough to leave no clues.

Rourke is alone on a manhunt, and time is running out. Eight victims have already fallen prey to this madman.

Can Rourke catch the killer and rescue the next victim before it’s too late?

I can’t give away any spoilers, but I was very careful in how I portrayed each character. Some people aren’t exactly who they seem to be. Initially Detective Rourke is looking for a missing woman, but then he stumbles across a serial killer. The book got several excellent reviews and I loved creating all the twists and turns in the story.

I love writing short stories and each of these tales is unique. A few take place around Halloween (my favorite holiday) and feature ghosts, a vampire, and lots of other strange goings-on. At the end of each story I share a bit about why I wrote it, and talk about the plot or characters. It was fun to revisit (and revise) the stories I wrote ages ago. I hope readers enjoy them!

4. So what’s next for you? More romances? Another horror novella? More short stories?

As most people know, I write in multiple genres: horror, romance, mystery, sci-fi… I go where the stories and ideas take me, and I’ve built a rather impressive (and eclectic) title list over the last 25+ years.

Recently, I started reflecting on my writing career. I’ve decided that at this stage of my life, I’m going back to my first love: writing horror/mystery/suspense stories. I have folders filled with ideas for spooky short stories and an outline for a novella that’s a follow-up (of sorts) to The Route 9 Killer.

I love creating characters and settings, world-building, and inventing troubles for my characters to get into (and out of), and I love all the books I’ve written. But spending weeks/months editing, revising, and proofreading a full-length romance novel is just not appealing to me anymore. So, For Love’s Sake was my last (and 24^th) romance.

As for the future… Who knows where my writings will show up? I may have a horror tale chosen for an anthology. My suspense story might be included in an e-zine, or I could self-publish my own short stories.

And I just finished writing the first draft of a new short story. It’s a blend of horror and fantasy. We’ll see where that leads later in 2025.

Romance Rewind: Cupid’s Schemes Volumes 1 & 2

Hi everyone,

This month on my blog, I’ll be sharing “romance rewinds” of my 2019 romance releases.

Here’s a look at my contemporary romance releases, Cupid’s Schemes - Volumes 1 & 2. As many readers know, I write romances in all genres (historical, fantasy, gay, paranormal, and contemporary) at all heat levels, but these novellas are something new for me. Instead of full-length romances, each book is a collection of flash-fiction stories.

Both volumes contain a dozen or more sweet romances where the characters meet under unusual circumstances and develop an intense connection. And that’s where I leave them—at the start of their relationship. Why?

I wanted to show how two people meet, feel a spark of romance, and then leave the rest of the story up to the reader’s imagination. What happens next is up to you. I end each story with the characters in good places and the potential to have a happy-ever-after ending with their new love interest. These feel-good stories are perfect for a boost of romance whenever or wherever you need it.

The settings vary from New Year’s Eve parties to snowstorms, summer picnics, and even a haunted corn maze. I grouped the stories by season, so as you read through each book, you’ll be following the calendar year. And believe it or not, some of these settings and “first meets” were inspired by true stories people have told me over the years.

New Year, New Love

“This New Year’s Eve party is going to be fun. I’m glad you could come at the last minute,” Sharon said to Diana as they stepped into the hotel lobby.

“Thanks for inviting me. I didn’t want to let your extra ticket go to waste,” Diana replied. She hated to admit that she’d had no other plans for tonight other than to curl up on the couch and watch a movie. She turned as Sharon’s boyfriend, Matt, and another man strolled up to them.

“You remember my cousin Eric, don’t you?” Sharon asked.

Diana gazed up at the six-foot-three blond hunk. Eric looked absolutely adorable in his dark gray suit, crisp white shirt, and blue and gray striped tie.

“Yes, of course.” How could she ever forget Eric? Even though she had only spent an afternoon with him, meeting a dreamboat like Eric stayed with a girl for a long time.

“Hi Eric. Happy New Year,” she said, then glanced at Sharon, confused. Why was Eric here? Was he alone? Where was his girlfriend, Melissa?

Eric stepped to her side. “Hi Diana. It’s nice to see you again. Can I take your coat?”

“Sure. Thanks.” She let Eric help her out of her gray wool coat. She caught his eyes roving down the front of her midnight-blue dress. She almost hadn’t worn the low-cut dress tonight, but then reconsidered. Why not? It was New Year’s Eve and she should dress up and look nice, even if she was single. One of her New Year’s resolutions was to jumpstart her boring life, starting tonight.

They handed their coats to the coat check attendant and strolled into a grand ballroom decorated in silver and gold. Eric kept pace with her as they followed Sharon and Matt to a table.

“This is some change, huh?” Eric said as he pulled out a chair for her. “The last time I saw you it was ninety degrees outside and we were both in a pool.”

Diana felt a blush creep into her cheeks. “I know. Sharon’s Labor Day party seems like yesterday.” She sighed as she recalled seeing Eric’s lean, tan body in nothing but blue swim trunks. She and Eric had gotten along fabulously at the party and they had a lot in common. They had been having harmless fun playing volleyball when Melissa showed up and everything went to hell.

But Melissa wasn’t here tonight. Did that mean Eric was single?

She looked at Eric and felt her pulse surge. Now she was elated that she had accepted Sharon’s invitation. This was one New Year’s Eve she’d never forget.
